Some of the group learn to cast

Yesterday some of our ladies helped run a beginner’s fly fishing session at Langley Dam, Hexham.

Nine ladies attended the event – all beginners and all desperate to have a go at fly fishing.

Head coach, Lucy Bowden ran the day assisted by level 1 coaches, Lynne Gattiss and Jane Johnston. Meeting in the lodge at 9am, a howling gale ripped across the lake as the ladies were welcome by Lucy. Each lady took it in turn to introduce herself as they talked about their experiences of fishing and what they hoped to get from the day.

Casting practice on the grass

The girls were then shown how to tackle up their kit before heading out onto the grass to be shown the basics of fly fishing, including the roll cast and overhead cast. Very quickly the ladies grasped both casts and were ready to head out onto the water.

Due to the wind, casting was difficult for even the best anglers, but the ladies persevered, and Trish Boyd caught her first ever Trout – a 3lb Rainbow. To say Trish was over the moon was an understatement and all the girls were buzzing with excitement.

Soon enough it was time to come off the lake and enjoy a delicious BBQ organised by Langley Dam.

We would like to thank the ladies for attending on Sunday and we look forward to welcoming them at future events. We’d also like to thank Langley Dam for their excellent hospitality.

It looks like it was very sunny, fishing, BBQ and a day out, the perfect day.
