I Thought I’d Take Up Fishing

A short poem by Club member, Lynn Gatiss…

I thought I’d take up fishing

Must be four years or more

To get away from housework

And all those boring chores.

I thought I’d take up fishing

Peace and quiet down by the lake

Instead we’re in the fishing lodge

Drinking coffee and eating cake.

I thought I’d take up fishing

With ladies all thinking the same

And now you’ll find us everywhere

It’s no longer a male domain.

I thought I’d take up fishing

But nobody told me that

No matter how much you diet

Waders will make you look fat.

I thought I’d take up fishing

And sometimes I even catch

But it’s more luck than angling skills

I can never match the hatch.

I thought I would take up fishing

But I only fish for the sport

I always put the fish straight back

Captain birds eye’s more my sort.

I thought I would take up fishing

But it’s nothing like what they said

I may just give up fishing

And write poetry instead.

I’m not going to give up fishing

That feeling when you catch a fish

And lots of laughs when someone falls in

What more could you possibly wish!
